कंप्यूटर का अर्थ (Meaning of computer) कंप्यूटर एक इलेक्ट्रानिक उपकरण है, जो डाटा तथा निर्देशों को इनपुट के रूप में ग्रहण करके उनका विश्लेषण करता है तथा आवश्यक परिणामों को निश्चित प्रारूप में आउटपुट साधन के ज़रिये उत्पन्न करता है| यह डाटा को भंडारण (Storage) भी करता| इसकी काम करने की गतिबहुत तेज होती है तथा यह त्रुटीरहित कार्य करता है| कंप्यूटर की परिभाषा (Definition of computer): ऑक्सफोर्ड डिक्शनरी के अनुसार "कंप्यूटर एक स्वचालित इलेक्ट्रानिक मशीन है, जो अनेक प्रकार की तर्कपूर्ण गणनाओं के लिए प्रयोग किया जाता है|" डाटा: यह तथ्यों और सूचनाओं का अव्यवास्थिक संकलन है| डाटा दो प्रकार के होते है; • संख्यात्मक डाटा (Numerical Data): यह अंकों से बना डाटा है| जिसमे 0, 1, 2, ......9 तक अंकों का प्रयोग किया जाता है| इस तरह के डाटा पर अंकगणितीय क्रिया कर सकते हैं| जैसे, विद्यार्थियों का प्राप्तंक तथा कर्मचारियों का वेतन आदि| • चिह्नात्मक डाटा (Alphanumeric Data): इसमें अंकों, अक्षरों, तथा चिन्हों का प्रयोग किया जाता| जैसे किसी का पता आदि| कंप्यूटर की विशेषताएं (Characteristics of computer) • तेज गति (Fast speed): कंप्यूटर बहुत ही तेज़ी से गणनाएं करता है| कंप्यूटर एक सेकंड में लाखों गणनाएं कर सकता है| कंप्यूटर के प्रोसेसर की स्पीड को हेर्त्ज़ (Hertz) में मापा जाता है| • स्वचालित (Automatic): कंप्यूटर एक स्वचालित उपकरण है| जब एक बार उपयोगकर्ता कंप्यूटर को निर्देश दे देता है तो उसके बाद कंप्यूटर सारा कार्य अपने आप ही करता है, तथा इस दौरान इंसानी हस्तक्षेप की सम्भावना बहुत ही कम होती है| • त्रुटी रहित (Accuracy): कंप्यूटर बहुत तेज़ी से त्रुटीरहित गणनाएं कर सकता है| अगर उपयोगकर्ता कंप्यूटर में निर्देश देते समय गलती न करे तो कंप्यूटर सारी गणनाएं सही सही करता है| अगर गणना करते समय कोई त्रुटी पायी जाती है तो वह उपयोगकर्ता का कारण होती| • गोपनीयता (Secrecy): कंप्यूटर में एक विकल्प होता है, जिसका इस्तेमाल करके कोई भी मनुष्य अपने दिए गए निर्देशों को कंप्यूटर में सुरक्षित रख सकता है| कोई दूसरा व्यक्ति उसको नहीं देख तथा पा सकता है| यह विकल्प पासवर्ड के प्रयोग का है| • विशाल भण्डारण क्षमता (Large storage capacity): कंप्यूटर में असीमित सूचनाओं तथा डाटा का संग्रहण किया जा सकता है| हम डाटा तथा सूचनाओं को कई तरह से संग्रहण कर सकते है| इनमे कुछ बाहरी तथा कुछ आंतरिक होते है| जैसे, हार्ड डिस्क, फ्लापी डिस्क, मैग्नेटिक टेप, सीडी रॉम, आदि| हमारे जीवन में कंप्यूटर का महत्व (Importance of computer in our lives) आज पूरे विश्व में कंप्यूटर का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है| आज के समय में हर जगह कंप्यूटर का उपयोग बढ़ता जा रहा है| आज हर जगह चाहे वह शिक्षण संसथान हो या वैज्ञानिक अनुसंधान हो, बैंक हो या चिकित्सा जगत सम्बंधित कार्य, रक्षा सम्बंधित कार्य या उद्द्योग एवं व्यापार में, प्रकाशन में या मनोरंजन में, संचार में या अंतरिक्ष प्रौद्दोगिकी में हर जगह कंप्यूटर का इस्तेमाल हो रहा है| कंप्यूटर का महत्व (Importance of computer) • शिक्षा में कंप्यूटर का महत्त्व: आज हर शिक्षण संस्थानों में विध्यार्तियों को कंप्यूटर द्वारा शिक्षा प्रदान की जा रही है| हर संस्थानों में डिजिटल लाइब्रेरी ने पुस्तकों की सर्वसुलभता सुनिश्चित कर दी है| आज बच्चों को छोटी कक्षाओं में ही कंप्यूटर के बारे में बताया और पढाया जा रहा है| इससे बच्चे छोटी उम्र से ही कंप्यूटर के बारे में जानने लगे हैं| • बैंकिंग क्षेत्र में कंप्यूटर का महत्त्व: कंप्यूटर के प्रयोग ने बैंकिंग क्षेत्र में क्रांति ला दी है| कंप्यूटर ने बैंक में काम करने की गति को बढ़ा दिया है| ए टी म (ATM) तथा ऑनलाइन बैंकिंग, चेक का भुगतान, रुपया गिनने में तथा पासबुक की एंट्री में कंप्यूटर का प्रोयोग किय जा रहा है| • चिकित्सा क्षेत्र में कंप्यूटर का महत्त्व: शरीर के अन्दर के रोगों का पता लगाने, उनका विश्लेषण और निदान करने के लिए कंप्यूटर का वृस्त्रित प्रयोग हो रहा है| कंप्यूटर की मदद से नयी-नयी बीमारियों के बारे में पता लगाने में आसानी होती है| • रक्षा: जिस तरह और जगहों पर कंप्यूटर की सहायता से कुशलतापूर्वक तथा तेज गति से काम हो रहा है, उसी तरह से रक्षा क्षेत्र में भी कंप्यूटर का भरपूर प्रयोग हो रहा है| रक्षा अनुसंधान, वायुयान नियंत्रण, मिसाइलों का संचालन तथा उनका नियंत्रण, रडार आदि में कंप्यूटर का प्रोयोग हो रह है|
